Still time to register for general election
Although it is too late to register to vote in the upcoming primary election on Sept. 17, there is still time left to cast your ballot on Nov. 5. To be eligible to vote in the general election, you must register by Oct. 16. If you are a U.S. citizen and 18 years of age by the election, you may register in Massachusetts. While many Brandeis undergraduates choose to keep their registration in their home state, since they reside in Massachusetts during the academic year, some may choose to vote here instead. The November election will not only determine the next governor, lieutenant governor and treasurer, but also U.S. and state representatives.
Sen. John Kerry (D-Mass.) is seeking reelection against Libertarian Michael Cloud. Waltham voters will also decide whether Democrat James Hall will takeover Edward Markey's (D-Mass.) Seventh District seat in the U.S. House. Other State Senate and House seats are up as well.
Voters will also decide on two ballot initiatives. The first is backed by Libertarian gubernatorial candidate Carla Howell and would abolish the state income tax effective July 1, 2003. The second is supported by Sen. Guy W. Glodis (D-Worcester) and would replace a transitional bilingual language program with an English immersion program.
