Massell, North Quads spread awareness about alcohol on campus
Displays in the Shapiro Campus Center last week were part of an Alcohol Awareness Week campaign entitled, "Drinking and thinking, using and not abusing." The project was coordinated by the two first-year quads in conjunction with Kathleen Maloney of the Health Center. "I think that Brandeis students are experimenting with alcohol, and I think that's something that's difficult that I feel we face as college administrators, is that alcohol is so prevalent at the high schools, that at a college setting we're forced to be reactive because students have been exposed to alcohol at the high school level," North Quad Director Dayna Baker said.
Kendra Bauer '04, a resident adviser in North Quad said the Department of Residence Life had introduced the idea of a program for alcohol awareness week. She said that resident advisers were wary of the approach, and chose to educate beyond alcohol's potential dangers, including how it is made and its cultural and religious uses.
"That's why we didn't want it to be 'alcohol is bad,' which I think is the message that gets spread around campus. We wanted students to fully understand the affects of alcohol on their bodies," Bauer said.
