Senate appoints Feinberg to new, non-voting position
Jennie Feinberg '07, who was the front-runner in the election for class of 2007 senator until being disqualified for creating a link to a voting Web site in her away message, has recently been appointed by the Union Senate to Chair of the Project Brandeis University Spirit (PBUS) group. "I'm thrilled about this position because it gives me the opportunity to spread my Brandeis pride to others," Feinberg said.
According to Feinberg, here are people at the Senate and on committees without Senate positions. But recently, there has been no one there who did not hold a Senate seat for any particular reason, until Feinberg began attending Senate meetings.
"I still wanted to help the school, like a Senator would have done, and have some say in Senate activities. I do not have voting rights, but I can still voice my opinions."
Feinberg said it is not easy to be the only non-Senate attendee of the weekly Senate meetings, held Sunday nights in the Shapiro Center.
"It was hard for me at first, kind of another slap in the face that I was kicked out of the organization I wanted so badly to help, but I've since realized I can still help without an official title."
"I'm really happy with the position, it gives me a lot of leeway to do practically anything I want, especially promote spirit, despite not having a vote in Senate decisions,"Feinberg said.
Feinberg has many plans for the resurrected PBUS committee, including re-decorating the new game room in downstairs Usdan.
"The main thing I am going to be focusing on at first with PBUS is re-decorating the new game room in Usdan, in the location of the old bookstore, to make it a really warm and welcoming place for the entire Brandeis community." Feinberg said. "I love to paint murals. Someone had asked me to do something with the game room and I said, 'OK.' I am hoping to get some help from the PBUS members as well."
Feinberg also has ideas of selling Brandeis clothing, encouraging Brandeis sports teams, as well as "a bunch of other surprises I have up my sleeve!"
Feinberg gives up her time Sunday nights to go and sit in on the meetings as the only constituent in attendance. "The Senate meetings are open to anyone who wants to attend them. But since they tend to last about six hours on Sunday nights, it's usually only Senate members that attend. I mean, who in their right mind would sit in on a six-hour meeting on their Sunday night? Yet because I was so excited to be involved with the Union, I'm choosing to still attend as a constituent."
"There are so many aspects of the school that are amazing and I want people to be proud of it." Feinberg said that she is excited for other students to help with ideas for the new recreation room, as well as helping on the new committee. "I love the opportunity to help people, and I love how people come to me with issues they have about the school and community."
Feinberg started the Brandeis Class of 2007 Yahoo Group, after she was accepted Early Decision last January and was able to meet many of her classmates before she matriculated.
"If I haven't met someone or they haven't met me yet, they will,"Feinberg said.
Feinberg is also a part of the Brandeis-Wellesley Orchestra, playing in the pit for this semester's musical, and she is an admission's volunteer.
A few election commissioners can kick me off the ballot, but no one's going near my motivation. I want to be thought of as the girl who loves Brandeis, or the girl that's decorating the new game room, not just the girl that was disqualified.
