The Brandeis softball team had a brutal spring training week in Florida, dropping all eight of their games last week. The Judges were competitive and stayed close in losses to University of Rochester, but also got slaughtered in shutouts at the hands of Washington University and Emory University. It was a disappointing weekend, and the Judges hope to rebound in the regular season.
Mari Levine '06 had two hits in four at bats as the Judges fell short against Rochester 6-5 on Wednesday. Emily Watterworth '04 had two hits in three at bats as the Judges came up just short against Rochester 3-2 again on Friday. Despite the difficult week, Sarah Albert '04 emerged as a powerful hitter for the Judges, batting .353 with two RBIs.
"There were a few games where we were on pace to win the game and endurance-wise we just couldn't keep it up," Melissa Leber '04 said. "We weren't keeping up our hitting and teams would come back. There were a bunch of games we could have won."
The Judges have a week to make adjustments before opening their regular season at home on Friday against Clark University at noon. The team has six seniors, but needs to improve their hitting.
"We need to start hitting better," Leber said. "The seniors need to be positive. We need to be able to deal with these losses and move on. We have a very strong team character, and we're very close knit.
