Valentine's Day. The day of love, romance and lots and lots of sex...or is it?For many years, Valentine's Day has been regarded as the ultimate occasion for love. Lovers get flowers, candy, cards and lots of affection-unless you are flying solo, of course. Sometimes emotions are so intense that two love-birds might start out the evening with dinner and dancing but almost immediately end up doing the horizontal tango.

Is Valentine's Day a just a thinly-veiled excuse for sex? Now, I don't mean just any kind of sex. Why do so many people lose their V-cards on Valentine's Day? Is it really because of the romantic atmosphere of this single day, or is it because of all the hype surrounding it?

I asked a bunch of my girlfriends why they think Valentine's Day is such a big "come screw me" day. "Because it's so romantic" was the most prevalent response. Still, they admitted finding such romance a bit clichd.

Apparently, people need to set aside this special day to appreciate their loved ones. It's the Mother's Day or Father's Day of love. But for most people, there is a larger issue than simply appreciating their loved ones. Valentine's Day is a constant reminder that there are lots of people out there in love and in happy relationships. The day places an unfair pressure on singles to find someone with whom to spend the day. For those who don't, there is an even stronger urge to drink tons of alcohol and forget that they're alone.

Valentine's Day might not only be about sex, but for us single folk, the day is an in-your-face reminder that we have no one to cuddle with at the end of the day. But if you're single, go out and enjoy the evening with a bunch of friends. If you happen to meet someone while you're out, awesome! But remember, Valentine's Day and venereal diseases have the same initials. Have a great day!
