Online dating sites: fun or just sketchy? We have all heard of dating Web sites like Jdate.com and Myspace.com, but I wanted to find out if they truly work.

A few weeks ago, two friends convinced me to register at Facethejury.com. Once my account was approved, my computer screen became filled with dialogue boxes from other users wanting to talk to me. It was a lot of fun and very flattering for the first hour or so-after all, I had accumulated a 9.2 rating-but it quickly became annoying. Instant message after instant message popped up on my screen and I couldn't get any work done. (Note to anyone who joins an online dating service: Do not make your screen name so readily available.)

I can't say that nothing good came from the whole online experience. I did start talking to a couple of people from the area, though our relationships are strictly limited to our computers. I'm also able to keep in touch with different friends from home who are almost never online.

I took my profile down after two weeks; the attention was getting out of hand, but it was a lot of fun.

I don't mean to put down such Web sites. I know people who used Jdate.com and found their soul mates. I also know people who ended up obtaining restraining orders to keep online stalkers from harassing them.

The Internet can be a bit sketchy, if not simply dangerous. But if you are looking for some laughs, amusement or something to boost your ego and self-esteem, definitely join an online community. Just make sure you don't give out any information that makes you feel uncomfortable. Have fun in cyberspace!
