Union Senate: Positions open for next semester
Students Taking Action Now: Darfur proposed that Brandeis fund a journal about the genocide in Darfur to be distributed to universities throughout the United States.Alex Braver '09 was appointed interim member of the Committee for Support of Teaching for the spring semester.
The Union passed its budget for the spring semester.
Representative to the Board of Trustees Albert Cahn '07 objected to the use of SAF funding for Nashim's all-women talent show because he said it excludes male members of the Brandeis community.
Joanna Drusin '06 said she was uncomfortable attending the talent show because of the disruption by Cahn, who was using a video camera at the event. Cahn said he recorded the event as evidence in case anyone was to ask the UJ to block funding of the event.
Assistant Dean of Student Life Alwina Bennett agreed to pay the $95 Nashim had requested from the SAF out of her discretionary fund.
Bennett announced that funds have been procured to keep Shapiro Campus Center open for 24 hours during the eight days of finals week.
Waltham Links, a club aimed at strengthening the relationship between Waltham and Brandeis was recognized. It hopes to advertise events occurring in both communities.
The Union unanimously passed a resolution calling for the conference rooms in Shapiro Campus Center to be open until 2 a.m., as they have been in past years.
A bylaw changing the distribution of the Senior Programs Fee was defeated 8-8. The proposal would have eliminated the 3.5 percent of the fee set aside for midyear graduation. If a midyear graduation does not occur, as was the case in previous years, the funds will be evenly divided between Senior Week and the Junior/Senior Formal.
Adam Gartner '07 presented revised Student Union bylaws, which include a provision prohibiting a professor from receiving the Student Union Teaching Award more than once over a three-year period. The revised bylaws passed unanimously.
The Senate passed a resolution requesting that the graduation speaker nomination process be opened to the Senior class. Alwina Bennett announced that because of administration concerns over the quality of the speakers, a Board of Trustees committee will select the speaker without direct input from the Senior class.
Senator for Off-Campus Students Miriam Sievers '06 announced that a van service will operate around Waltham during the daytime hours beginning in the spring semester. The service is contingent on the ability of Crystal Transport to obtain a van from Canada.
Winter elections will be held to fill vacancies for the positions of Senator for the Class of 2006, Senator for the Class of 2007, Senator for the Class of 2008 and East Quad Senator.
The Senate confirmed Darren Gallant '08 as Director of Club Development. He resigned as Senator for the Class of 2008.
