Senior charged for assaulting 2 cops
Waltham Police arrested a student who allegedly assaulted two officers in the early hours of March 25, after what police described as a violent and hysterical confrontation with Brandeis and Waltham officers. Kathryn Schill '06, a 21-year-old psychology major from Longmeadow, Mass., was arraigned March 27 on four felony counts, including three counts of assault on police officers and one count of assault with a dangerous weapon.
The weapon was identified by police in their report as a pair of brown Ugg boots.
Schill declined several requests for comment throughout the weekend.
According to the report, Schill was handcuffed and lying on the ground when Waltham police arrived to assist Brandeis officers. The Waltham police report, filed by Officer Kristen Philpott, described Schill as highly intoxicated. Philpott was unavailable for comment.
Philpott assisted officers in trying to get Schill to sit up, but she was "constantly yelling and screaming at all officers present," Philpott wrote. Schill allegedly exclaimed to police that she was only trying to go home, and the police were violating her rights. She began squirming, the report says, trying to get out of the handcuffs, and soon began spitting on the officers. One of her assault counts was for spitting on Philpott.
While Schill was being forced into a police car, she started spitting again. Philpott wrote that she placed her hand over Schill's face to stop her from spitting, only to have Schill begin biting the palm of her right hand "for approximately 10 seconds without releasing."
While trying to restrain Schill in the back seat of the police car, Philpott reported that Schill kicked her several times in the face "causing the skin [to] break and bleed." Schill's boots were later confiscated for evidence.
Emergency medical technicians transported Schill to Newton Wellesley Hospital.
After being treated for her own wounds at the hospital, Philpott informed Schill that charges were being filed, setting off another outburst, she wrote. Schill started yelling loudly in the emergency room, and when officers allegedly tried to calm her, she punched Waltham officer John Connarton in the face.
Shortly after, Schill was escorted out of the hospital and placed in a holding cell at the Waltham police station.
What led to Schill's confrontation with Brandeis police remains unclear. Schill was already in handcuffs when the Waltham police arrived.
"The person was intoxicated and highly violent," Director of Public Safety Ed Callahan said. "There was a behavioral concern that precipitated the need for further support."
Brandeis Police officers on duty at Stoneman Monday declined comment, referring questions to Callahan.
