Student Activities to give away space
One student group looking for permanent meeting and work space has a chance to take over a conference room in the Shapiro Campus Center, according to a Student Activities official. Campus clubs had until Friday to submit applications for the space, Conference Room D, on the third floor of the campus center, Director of Student Activities Stephanie Grimes said.
Two clubs submitted proposals, Grimes said, though she declined to name them.
But the Justice has learned Students Talking About Relationships, a peer-counseling group to help students maintain healthy relationships, is one of the groups that wants to use the space.
Jessica Gambel '08, a co-coordinator of STAR, said her group had informal discussions with Student Activities about using the space since earlier this semester.
They submitted a formal proposal last week for the room, which Student Activities currently uses as storage space.
STAR now works out of the Women's Resource Center along with the Feminist Majority Leadership Association.
Gambel said it is sometimes difficult for her group to coordinate with FMLA.
STAR sometimes has to conduct private counseling in the hallway, Gambel said.
Despite only two clubs applying for the space, Grimes said club leaders have made it "abundantly clear" that they need more space for their activities.
Officials from the Activist Resource Center-who hoped to move into the conference room after the administration said it was not feasible for them to use an empty space in the Village last month-said they no longer are interested in moving to Shapiro because they have found space in the Intercultural Center.
ICC officials told ARC that they can share the office of the Chinese Cultural Connection.
The committee to review the applications will consist of Grimes and other University and Student Union officials.
A campuswide e-mail sent by Student Activities announcing the availability of the space said that the committee would consider sizes of clubs' memberships, as well as clubs' intended contributions to the Brandeis community.
