The University will attempt a trial run March 10 of a shuttle service to Brookline after a previous effort failed, according to Director of Public Safety Ed Callahan.Callahan said the shuttle, which consists of one full-size bus of 50 to 55 seats and a 25-seat mini-coach, will take students to the Coolidge Corner Green Line T-stop.

Senator for the Class of 2008 Michael Goldman said he, Castle Quad Senator Eric Alterman '09 and Union President Alison Schwartzbaum '08 recently met with Callahan and a representative from Crystal Transport to confirm another trial run after last December's trial run was cancelled due to low student interest.

Before the finals period, the Student Union sold $1 tickets for the trial run, which was to leave from the Spingold Theater.

For years, Goldman said, students have been requesting a more direct connection to Brookline and its restaurants, many of which are kosher, as well as its shopping areas and large movie theater.

"This service will not just benefit the current classes at Brandeis, but future students at this University," he said. "Brookline is a fantastic student gathering spot that unfortunately has been not discovered by many due to its inaccessibility."

Goldman said the low student interest before the last scheduled run is not an indication of a lack of interest for the service, based upon a survey that attracted 810 interested responses.

Also, he said, the fact that tickets were required in advanced hampered student interest as students tend not to make social plans well in advance.

The shuttle will be paid for with funds from the Public Safety budget, Callahan said.

"I'm here to work with students, so hopefully this service will satisfy them," he said, adding the success or failure of the trial run will help consider the feasibility of a permanent shuttle and how much capacity the permanent shuttle would have.
