There are conflicting reports as to how many students actually took last Saturday's trial run shuttle to Coolidge Corner. Director of Public Safety Ed Callahan said only 29 students had used the new service, but his department's data and Student Union observations conflict with that number.According to Jake Aaron '09, an escort service employee who monitors the buses, 15 students rode the 5:30 p.m. shuttle and 18 used the 7 p.m. run. Three students rode on the 8:30 departure and four on the 9:15 return.

Senator for the Class of 2008 Michael Goldman had been working with Callahan to start the new shuttle service to provide students with easier access to Brookline and the Green Line.

Castle Quad Senator Eric Alterman '09 said that number only included the mini-bus and not the larger bus that also went on the six runs between Brandeis and Brookline. A rider of the 5:30 mini-bus, Alterman said students told him the big bus was full, so they had to use the mini-bus.

He also said that there were 25-30 students who were waiting for the 7:45 return to Brandeis that were not recorded because the bus arrived on the wrong side of the street.

Based on his understanding of how many students have used the bus, Callahan said a weekly shuttle would not be feasible. "The numbers are not too optimistic," he said, adding he will meet with the Union Senate to discuss the shuttle's future, which may include runs every other week.

Goldman said a bi-weekly shuttle would be an "acceptable compromise," but called Callahan's statistics "demonstrably false."

"People want to see this move from an event to an institution," Goldman said. "Students are realizing this tremendous new way to access the Boston area to liven up Brandeis weekends."
