SOFTBALL: Judges rally to tie Wellesley
After committing a combined three errors in a 4-2 loss during the first game of a doubleheader at Wellesley College last Thursday, shortstop Chelsea Korp '10 and third baseman Danielle Lavallee '11 wanted to make up for their mistakes in the second game."Personally I don't think I played greatly in the first game, so I just did my best on the opposite side of the field to try and help produce runs . and try not to get any more errors than I already had," Korp said.
The two put that contest behind them, driving in all three runs in a fifth-inning rally that saved the Judges from being swept in the doubleheader. After losing the first game 4-2, the second game was stopped due to darkness with the score tied at three.
The Judges are now 5-6-1 on the season after games at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology last Wednesday and at home against Bates College were canceled. The game against MIT will now be played April 16 or 17, while the contest against Bates has yet to be rescheduled. The doubleheader against Wellesley was originally scheduled to be played at Brandeis, but poor field conditions called for it to be moved to Wellesley.
Though they did salvage a tie in the second game last Thursday, the Judges were not able to pick up a victory and maintain the momentum they gained when defeating University Athletic Association champion Washington University in St. Louis March 15.
"It's a different environment; it's a different situation," pitcher Emily Vaillette '10 said. "We had to play for the entire week [in Florida] and then we come back to the cold weather, and [after] not having played in a few days, you have to get back to the swing of things."
Wellesley took a 1-0 lead off Vaillette in the top of the second inning and added another run in the fourth inning, but Brandeis came storming back in the bottom of the fifth. Catcher Amelia Schimmel '08 walked to lead off the inning, and outfielder Erin Thorn '11 singled, sending Schimmel to second. One batter later, Korp hit an RBI double to pull Brandeis within one run, and Lavallee followed with another double that drove in two runners and gave the Judges a 3-2 lead.
"We have a good team. We just have to keep our chins up when we get behind," Vaillette said. "If we stay ahead of things then we're good to go."
The lead did not last, however, as Wellesley scored the game-tying run off relief pitcher Natalie Volpe '08. Once the Judges were unable to score in the bottom of the inning, the game was called.
Earlier in the day, the Judges lost 4-2 in a game during which they committed three errors, two by Korp and one by Lavallee.
"I know in general it was tough with it being so cold out and us just coming back from Florida," Korp said. "Personally, for Brandeis, I think we were kind of slow in our warm-ups, and I think that just kind of carried over a little bit into the first game."
Brandeis took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning after pitcher Kate Streilein '08 reached base on an error, bringing Thorn home from second base. But Wellesley took a 2-1 lead in the fourth inning when rookie Brittany Bakacs singled in two runners. One of those runners was junior pitcher Barbarajean Grundlock, who reached base on Korp's second error of the day.
A defensive miscue also cost the Judges in the top of the fifth inning. Lavallee committed a throwing error, allowing Wellesley sophomore outfielder Ilana Orloff to reach base. Orloff scored the first run of the inning on an RBI double by junior Amanda Tai, and Wellesley added another to take a 4-1 lead.
The Judges had one last chance after cutting the deficit to 4-2 in the bottom of the seventh inning, but with runners on first and second bases, Lavallee harmlessly hit a fly ball in the infield to end the game.
"I think when we started off that inning I definitely thought there was a chance [for a comeback]," Korp said. "Three runs down is not too hard to come back from. We just couldn't put it together at the end."
The Judges' next game is against Simmons College at home March 26 at 3 p.m.
