Union reps to propose rollover Union funds
The Senate chartered Brandeis Students for Justice in Palestine, which seeks to represent a Palestinian perspective on the Middle East conflict. The Senate had earlier voted with a two-thirds majority to consider the charter over the objection of Ways and Means Committee Chair Asher Tanenbaum '08.Club founders Lisa Hanania '11 and Noam Shouster '11 later came before the Senate and said that they felt they had been subjected to unfair questions by some senators during the process of chartering the club.
Student Union President Shreeya Sinha '09 reported that Union representatives would present a proposal to the Board of Trustees regarding the issue of rollover funds in Student Union finances. She said the proposal had also been discussed with Senior Vice President for Students and Enrollment Jean Eddy.
After a presentation by Independent Voices for Endowment Sustainability and Transparency, the Senate unanimously passed a resolution calling for greater transparency of Brandeis' endowment, and advocating for the creation of a committee composed of students, faculty and administrators to evaluate Brandeis' investments based on the ideal of social justice.
Senator for the Class of 2010 Jenna Brofsky reported that a trial run took place over the weekend for selling cage-free eggs in Usdan. She reported a complete switch to cage-free eggs is possible if enough demand can be generated.
Union Advocate Brian Paternostro '08 presented a draft for a students' Bill of Rights that the Union plans to circulate among students.
The Senate voted to remove a requirement in the Union's bylaws to allocate funding yearly toward the Novus Guide for first-years.
The Senate chartered Chak de Deis, a club devoted to teaching students about South Asian Dance.
The Senate passed a Senate Money Resolution of $153.81 for a project under which students could send postcards to friends studying abroad.
