WSOCCER: Squad suffers first loss of 2008
The women's soccer team was less than six minutes away from securing a tie against No. 25 Springfield College last Saturday, but Springfield rookie midfielder Jen Jahoda headed senior defender Delaney Cantrell's corner kick into the net in the 105th minute to give the Pride a 2-1 victory, ending the Judges' nine-match winning streak dating back to last season."We made a mistake defending," coach Denise Dallamora said. "Somebody should have been there."
Brandeis is now 4-1 on the season, including last Wednesday's 2-0 victory over Babson College.
After a scoreless first half, the Judges' lone goal came in the 70th minute when forward Izabella Miranda '12 received a pass from forward Tiffany Pacheco '11 in front of the net. Miranda knocked the ball into the lower left corner of the goal to give the Judges a 1-0 lead.
"It was kind of like a 50-50 [ball] between me and [Springfield senior goalkeeper Sue Jenney]," Miranda said. "But I got through before she did."
Springfield tied the game just over a minute later when Cantrell hit a free kick from the left side of the field into the upper right corner of the goal, just over the outstretched hands of goalie Hillary Rosenzweig '10. The goal was the first the Judges surrendered in over 831 minutes, dating back to last season.
The game remained tied for the rest of regulation and through the first overtime before Springfield clinched it in double overtime.
"We were playing really well," Miranda said. "We were down there the whole time and I just thought we were better . then they got the corner [kick], and they got it in, but good teams will penalize you for stupid mistakes, and that's what they did."
Brandeis had many opportunities to pull ahead, outshooting Springfield 23-13, including 7-2 in the first half. In the 30th minute, Miranda had an open shot go just wide left of the goal. Less than two minutes later, midfielder Mimi Theodore '12 sent a long pass to Pacheco that Jenney saved.
"Sometimes that's just the luck," Dallamora said of her team's missed shots. "It's just the way [the ball] bounced around. It just didn't happen to bounce in the right direction."
The missed opportunities continued in the second half, when the Judges had 10 shots but only scored once. At one point the Judges took four shots in just under a four-minute span, but none of them found the net.
In the first overtime session, Brandeis outshot Springfield 6-2, including three in the last 2 minutes, 23 seconds of the period. Pacheco hit a shot in the 98th minute that Jenney saved and midfielder Alanna Torre '12 had a shot blocked in the 100th minute. Forward Melissa Gorenkoff '10 sent a shot wide four seconds later to end the first overtime period.
The Judges did not attempt another shot in the second overtime before they were called for an offsides penalty in the 104th minute, giving Springfield the ball and leading to Jahoda's game winner.
"It was a good game; you can't fault [our players]," Dallamora said. "We need to finish a little better."
Last season, Springfield also defeated the Judges 2-1 by scoring late in the game when sophomore midfielder Jillian Pereira got a goal with just under 90 seconds left in regulation.
"I think with every team [we play], we want to go out and win, but [Springfield] comes out so strong," Pacheco said. "They're such a good team and I think losing last year [meant] we definitely wanted to get a win this year, because we definitely are capable of beating them."
Pacheco scored twice in the first half of the Judges' 2-0 win over Babson College last Wednesday, with Miranda assisting on both her goals. Babson managed 12 shots, but Rosenzweig made three saves to preserve the shutout.
The Judges look to bounce back on a five-game road trip starting Wednesday at Bridgewater State College at 3:30 p.m. and continuing Saturday at Clark University at noon.
