The men's tennis team doubles squad of Nick White '11 and Simon Miller '11 lost in the quarterfinals of the 2010 Intercollegiate Tennis Association New England Regional Championships at Williams College. The duo, which was the No. 1 seed in the tournament, defeated the Wheaton College doubles team of seniors Harry Altman and Greg Poulin 8-1. The two then took an 8-5 win over the Williams College duo of junior Will Petrie and sophomore Dylan Page, allowing the Judges to advance to the quarterfinals in the tournament.

Here the Judges faced their most difficult opponent, as Miller and White took on the Amherst College doubles team of junior Wes Waterman and senior Moritz Koenig. The Judges were unable to escape with a win and lost by a score of 8-5.

Miller said he was not happy with the result.

"[White and I] were definitely disappointed that we didn't go further," Miller said. "[It was] just disappointing we couldn't do better our senior year."

Coach Ben Lamanna acknowledged the talent of the other schools.

"It's the best tournament in the country in Division III, and the Northeast region is real tough. You got some pretty good schools in there that we play against.

"The strength of our team is not quite set up to do real well at that tournament. We're . a really deep squad. Our strength is in the depth."

Miller and White also took part in the singles tournament. White was the eighth seed and given a bye for the first round. However, both Miller and White lost in their opening matches. Miller fell to Trinity College senior Rich Bonfiglio 6-4, 6-3, and White was upset by Amherst College junior Robby Sorrel 6-0, 6-1.

In addition to White and Miller, Steven Milo '13 and Fred Rozenshteyn '13 competed in the singles bracket. Of the four Brandeis singles participants, only Rozenshteyn won a match, defeating Middlbury College junior David Farah 7-6, 6-4. Rozenshteyn then lost to No. 6 Bates College freshman Matt Bettles 6-2, 6-2.

Milo played Middlebury freshman Teddy Fitzgibbons and lost 6-0, 6-0.

While the men's team was not as successful as it would have liked, Lamanna commented on how the tournament's emphasis on individual performance made it difficult for the Judges, who are built on depth to succeed.

"The strength of our team is not quite set up to do real well at that tournament," Lamanna said. "We're a really deep squad. Our strength is in the depth."

The ITA tournament was the men's second competition of the season. The men are coming off of a successful outing at the Middlebury College Invitational Sept. 11 and 12. At Middlebury, Miller and White were able to reach the finals in doubles in the A bracket after defeating three teams in a row: one Bates duo and two Middlebury squads by scores of 8-2, 8-4 and 8-3, respectively.

The men's tennis team has its next match against the Coast Guard Academy this Friday at 3 p.m.

Last year, the Judges commandingly defeated Coast Guard 9-0. In the match, Brandeis dropped only a single set. Despite the sweep, White had trouble with Nick Martin '10, but was able to defeat his opponent by scores of 3-6, 6-4, 10-5.

Despite the Judges' success against Coast Guard last season, Lamanna commented on Coast Guard's improvement as a squad.

"Coast Guard is coming in with a really good squad," Lamanna said. "They have a double team that did pretty well. They did about as well as we did, and they'll pose a challenge to us.
