Women's Soccer: Judges score early and often in wins
On Sept. 16 against Roger Williams University, it took the Judges just 45 minutes to score three goals. At Simmons College last Sunday, it took Brandeis just 5 minutes, 57 seconds to score four goals to open up the game. The Judges added a fifth goal later in the first half and held strong throughout the rest of the game to defeat Simmons 5-0. The win brings their record to 6-1-1 on the year after they defeated Gordon College 3-1 last Thursday afternoon.
Brandeis' first goal came courtesy of forward Sofia Vallone '11 at the 2:13 mark, who fired a shot from just outside the 18-yard line into the upper right hand corner of the net.
Midfielder Mimi Theodore '12 then put the Judges up by two goals at the 3:59 mark. After a shot by Vallone hit the post, Theodore tried to head in the rebound for a goal. The shot went off the hands of Simmons junior goalie Ashley Wheeler, but Theodore was able to head in the rebound for her fourth goal of the season.
The Judges' third goal came off the foot of forward Tiffany Pacheco '11 at the 5:49 mark.
Vallone got her second goal of the game on a diagonal run 8 seconds later. Vallone's two goals give her a team-high eight goals on the season, already two more than she had scored all of last season.
"[Vallone's] doing a great job," Theodore said. "She's very composed, great footwork, and she's really able to use that to her advantage and get around players. She's very confident in her play. She's working hard at practice, and that's carrying over to games."
Brandeis got its final goal of the afternoon with 6:32 remaining in the first half. Midfielder Megan Bautista '13 kicked a corner to midfielder Annie Teece '14, who put it into the net for her first career goal.
Theodore noted that the field at Simmons College was smaller than Gordon Field, on which Brandeis plays. However, the team practiced on a smaller field during the week to prepare for the game.
"We practiced [Saturday] on a short field, because their field is a lot shorter than ours and it's not as wide," Theodore said. "And I think because of that we were able to catch our passes. . We practiced doing corner kicks not as far in, set plays not as far out. Just working on a smaller field, I think we were able to make a quick adjustment to their field and just kind of capitalize on all their weaknesseS."
Last Thursday afternoon, the Judges came from behind to defeat Gordon College. Brandeis outshot the Fighting Scots 19-6 in the first half, but neither team was able to put any points on the board in that period.
Gordon then scored the first goal of the game just under 6 minutes into the second half. After the Fighting Scots chipped the ball over the Judges' defense, sophomore midfielder Caitlin Nedde beat Brandeis goalkeeper Francine Kofinas '13 to the ball and shot it into the empty net.
But the Judges quickly stormed back with Vallone scoring two goals in a 2:31 span to put Brandeis ahead for good.
Vallone's first goal came less than two minutes after the Gordon goal. Theodore passed the ball to defender Alanna Torre '12, who beat her defender along the goal line and crossed the ball to Vallone in front of the net. Vallone then tapped the ball into the net for the finish.
Vallone then scored her second goal of the game when she controlled the ball along the end line and fired it across the field and into the corner of the net.
Theodore admitted the team's urgency increased after giving up the early goal in the second half.
"I guess it was kind of just like a wake-up call. When you go down 1-0 in the second half, you really have no other way to react but to go towards the goal," she said. "I think everyone knew that we had to get a goal quickly, but it's harder and harder to get a goal with not much time left."
Brandeis got an insurance goal in the 79th minute when Theodore fed the ball to Pacheco, who dribbled it closer to the net and then fired it in to put Brandeis up 3-1.
The Judges are next in action tomorrow afternoon at Wellesley College at 4 p.m. before returning home on Saturday to begin University Athletic Association play against Case Western Reserve University at 11 a.m.
