Women's Soccer: Offense fuels team in wins over two schools
The women's soccer team had a 3-0 lead at halftime against Roger Williams University last Thursday, and at the start of the second half the team picked up right where it left off. Forward Tiffany Pacheco '11 scored just over 5 minutes into the second half after she dribbled past a defender and shot the ball just under the crossbar and into the net. The Judges went on to win the game 6-0 to move their record to 4-1-1 for the season.
The Judges have now scored 11 goals in their past three games since not scoring against William Paterson University in a tie Sept. 5.
"We've been working a lot at practice on shooting, definitely more than we had started off with," Pacheco said. "So I think that helped us at scoring and framing the goal and just taking the opportunities when we have them."
Midfielder Mimi Theodore '12, the team's leading scorer last year, scored her second and third goals of the season in less than a 3-minute span to give the Judges an early 2-0 lead.
In the 8th minute, Theodore headed in a corner kick from Pacheco and in the 11th minute, midfielder Ellie Einhorn '11 sent a ball past the defense that Theodore shot into the back of the net.
The team then got its third goal of the period when rookie midfielder Madeline Stein '14, who had come into the game off the bench, lofted a shot from 20 yards out over the keeper and into the net for her first collegiate goal.
"I think [Stein] is going to be a really great midfielder for us," Pacheco said. "She worked really hard and she's feisty, and she brings a lot of energy to the field, so I was really happy that she got her first goal [last] Thursday."
After Pacheco's goal, the Judges got two more goals within a 3- minute span to put the game away. Midfielder/defender Alanna Torre '12 got her first goal of the season in the 63rd minute. In the 66th minute, forward Sofia Vallone '11 scored her team-leading fourth goal of the season on a cross by Pacheco.
Pacheco tied her career-highs with three assists and five total points in one game, and she moved into a tie for second place on the Judges' all-time assists list. She currently has 23 and is five behind Melissa Gorenkoff '09 for first place on the list. She also currently has 71 career points, which is good for eighth in school history.
"Tiffany is doing super," coach Denise Dallamora said. "[She] looks to feed her teammates as well as take opportunities when they are there for herself and the team, obviously. She's definitely an unselfish player. . She does everything. She's just doing great."
Even though the team was up by six goals midway through the second half, Pacheco knew the team had to remain focused.
"It's all about focus and keeping that focus throughout the game and keeping things going," Pacheco said. "The worst that you could do is to let down, so we just kept attacking and playing our game and didn't let the score affect us."
Last Tuesday, the Judges won their first road game of the season by defeating Bridgewater State University by a score of 2-1. The Judges got on the board first in the 34th minute when Einhorn scored her first goal of the season on a breakaway.
The team then scored what proved to be the game-winning goal in the 55th minute when Pacheco connected from 25 yards out on a pass from defender Francesca Shin '12. Bridgewater State was able to pull within one goal in the 83rd minute with a goal from junior forward/midfielder Jordan McDermott but could not get any closer.
The Judges next play Thursday when they host Gordon College at 4 p.m. The team will then face Simmons College Sunday at 1 p.m.
