Women's fencing goes 3-2 at invitational
The women’s fencing team fought its way to a 3-2 record in Teaneck, New Jersey at the Farleigh Dickinson University Invitational this past Sunday. The Judges started off their day with a defeat to the 10th-ranked Temple University, with saber Ashley Jean ’17 notching two of Brandeis’ five wins in the match. She finished the day with an overall record of 12-2.
The team defeated ex-University Athletic Association rival Johns Hopkins University 15-12 in the second round, powered by a 6-3 performance by the foil fencers. Jean went undefeated for the sabers while Liz Feller ’18 posted a 2-0 mark of her own, despite the epee’s loss. Foilists Annie Kim ’16 and Zimeng Xue ’18 went 2-1 each to clinch the win.
Kim said that the team needs "a stronger mentality when facing strong opponents like Temple."
The North Jersey Institute of Technology Highlanders were no match for the women, as the Judges defeated them by a score of 24-3. The final two rounds were each decided by one bout, as the Judges edged Stevens Colllege 14-13, but lost to hosts FDU by the same score.
Jean was undefeated in saber again and Gwen Mowell ’16 posted a 3-0 mark of her own against the Stevens Ducks. Against FDU, the sabers and epees won 6-3, but the Judges could not overcome an 8-1 foil defeat.
Mowell commented that "the underclassmen have done an amazing job of bringing both wins and great encouragement to the team. We would not be as successful or spirited without them."
The Judges close out their dual meet portion of their schedule on Wednesday at 5 p.m. in the Gosman Sports and Convocation center at the eighth annual Beanpot tournament. The Judges will host Boston /College, Harvard University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
