Brandeis University’s Independent Student Newspaper Since 1949 | Waltham, MA

For 75 years, the award-winning Justice, the independent student newspaper of Brandeis University, has been committed to keeping the campus informed and nurturing an environment of journalistic excellence.

Our paper is thriving: our diverse staff is comprised of over 20 editors, and our reporting is more important now than ever with all of the changes occurring at the University and beyond. We continue to uphold our namesake, Justice Louis Brandeis' value of truth that we were founded on, and to ensure our publication is held to the highest standard of journalistic integrity. We are proud of the contributions we have made to the Brandeis community this year and in years past, and we strive to continue this work.

Recently, our coverage has included changes to university leadership, the election, a wrongful death lawsuit, layoffs, racism investigations in the athletics department, last year’s campus protests leading to arrests, and campus infrastructure, among other articles and investigative stories.

The Justice has been the only consistent news source in the Waltham area in recent years — not only do we have a responsibility to keep the campus informed, but so too do we have a responsibility to cover important events impacting the local community, such as the re-opening of the Embassy Cinema and local elections

Our website has over 200,000 unique viewers, and we have accumulated thousands of followers across all of our social media platforms. Last year, we published 21 print issues.

But this year, unfortunately, we are not able to sustain that level of production due to crippling universal budget cuts. Like many other organizations, we did not receive the full amount of funding that we requested. We requested $36,725 for printing alone — our largest cost — but received only $22,000 after filing an appeal. These budget cuts have forced us to abridge our publishing schedule and reduce the number of print issues we publish during the school year, which is unsustainable in the long run.

We fear this is the beginning of the end of The Justice in print. It is a slippery slope, where we accommodate our new budget at the start by removing a few print issues, and next year, when our funding likely gets cut even more, the expectation is we will just pivot to an online-only publication.

This is a common theme in local journalism: funding gets cut, and publications that were once in print must become completely digital. We do not want to be the next newspaper to abandon its print roots and fully digitize.

This is where you come in. We need your help to ensure the longevity of The Justice in print. With your donations, in addition to guaranteeing that we can remain in print throughout the school year, we can provide excellent development opportunities for our staff — including bringing in guest speakers, attending journalism conferences, cover office expenses for supplies as well as food and drink, and applying for awards — and we will be able to stay up to date with the latest software and equipment that we need to produce high quality and efficient work.

We appreciate any and all contributions to this capital campaign effort and hope to welcome you to campus soon for a Justice alumni event. With all The Justice alumni around the world, we are counting on you to help The Justice continue to thrive for generations to come. One hundred percent of your donation will go entirely to The Justice and fund our important journalistic work in the Brandeis community which is more important than ever in these troubled times. We are more than happy to earmark donations for an area of choice. If you would like to contribute to our campaign, you may do so by check or online payment (see below). Please contact us at editor@thejustice.org with any questions or to discuss other ways to help.

We look forward to connecting with you.
