In a reversal of policy that was surprising to almost no one, on March 16 the University restored the 96-hour testing window requirement that has been in place for much of the pandemic. This change came less than a week after a sternly worded email from the administration regarding a rise in positive cases and close contacts, and only 11 days after the testing window was reduced to 168 hours. This board had previously questioned the sensibility of reducing testing frequency at the same time as lifting the campus-wide mask mandate. While we appreciate that community members have been able to continue to test at any chosen frequency, we believe that this campus-wide requirement is best-suited to keep everyone safe.

This upcoming Formula 1 season will see several large changes to the sport. First, there have been new rules implemented for the 2022 season. According to Sky Sports, the three main changes are the implementation of a ground-effect floor, simplified aero components, and 18-inch tires with wheel winglets. The ground-effect, a concept which was popular back in the 1970s, causes a suction effect between the car and the tarmac which provides downforce—a downwards force that allows cars to move faster—without the drag that is caused by rear and front wings. Simplified front wings are responsible for narrowing air flow and decreasing the effectiveness of the Drag Reduction System. DRS is a system that opens the rear wing on straights to encourage overtaking, i.e. passing other cars on the track. The new front wing not only changes airflow but also improves the visual aesthetic of the vehicles. Lastly, the new tires should allow drivers to have better control of their cars while racing. The new rules have been said to “even the playing field,” according to many drivers on the grid.

On Feb. 8, Harvard beat Boston College in the Women’s Beanpot championship by a score of 5-4. The Beanpot is a competition between four Boston universities’ men’s and women’s hockey teams: Harvard University, Boston College, Boston University, and Northeastern University. However, the women’s championship game was played at Matthews Arena, the home of Northeastern Hockey, and the entirety of the men’s Beanpot competition was played at TD Garden, the home of the Boston Bruins. This is just one example in Boston — and in the nation as a whole — that women’s sports are not as valued or as well-attended compared to men’s sports.

The United States is diplomatically boycotting the Beijing 2022 Olympics due to concerns of human rights violations in Xinjiang China. On Feb. 13, the Cincinnati Bengals will be traveling to SoFi Stadium to play the Los Angeles Rams in Super Bowl LVI. SoFi Stadium is located in Inglewood, California and is home to the Rams. This will be the second consecutive year that a team will be competing for the championship on their home turf. Last year, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers hosted the Kansas City Chiefs at Raymond James Field and produced a monumental win, capturing the recently retired NFL legend Tom Brady’s seventh ring. Prior to the 2020 Super Bowl, no team had ever played for the championship at their home field.
