Senate charters new clubs, approves name changes of three existing clubs

 The Student Union Senate chartered two clubs and approved the name change of three clubs. Director of Accessibility Hana Miller ’25 informed the Senate of an executive money resolution, which the e-board approved, for funding the upcoming “Sundown Scream” event. Miller said that it is an inexpensive and stress-relieving event intended to help students around finals time.

Brandeis welcomes families to campus for family weekend

Campus was bustling this past weekend with over 1,300 families from 42 different states and 11 countries flocking to the University for Brandeis Family Weekend, according to  the Brandeis Family Weekend webpage. The programming of Family Weekend consisted of a wide variety of activities including various sporting events, student performances, academic lectures from faculty members, campus tours, support staff-based information sessions, and family gatherings. The University worked to make this programming accessible to all, including Shabbat observant families, by offering guided walks with volunteer escorts from Usdan Student Center to the Boston Marriott Newton.

Las Vegas Aces wins 2022 WNBA Championship, Chelsea Gray named Finals MVP

 As forward A’ja Wilson secured the final rebound and the clock ran out in the Mohegan Sun Arena, in Connecticut, the Las Vegas Aces captured their first franchise title in the Women’s National Basketball Association after falling short in previous seasons. This is also the first professional championship for Las Vegas, a city known for its prominent gambling industry. Aces guard Chelsea Gray won the Finals Most Valuable Player with an average of 18.3 points, six assists, a stellar 58.5 field-goal percentage, and a 45 percent three-point shooting percentage. Gray contributed twenty points in the championship-clinching game and has been the go-to option for the Aces during clutch times throughout the postseason. 

LeBron James chases monumental NBA records

The 77th season of the National Basketball Association will begin on Oct. 18, 2022. This season is particularly special for LeBron James, one of the greatest players of all time. James is on pace to break the NBA All-Time Career Scoring record. He is trailing Kareem Abdul-Jabbar by 1326 points. In addition, James is also on pace to pass Magic Johnson on the NBA All-Time Career Assist List; he needs only 97 more assists to pass the Los Angeles Laker legend, per an ESPN article. James is on pace to break both this year. Prominent players and sports analysts say that if James can accomplish these two feats in the same season, then he will be considered by many to be the best basketball player of all time.

Waltham skaters ‘ollie’ into advocacy for a better skatepark

At around 3 p.m. on a sunny Saturday afternoon, the Waltham Skatepark at Jack Koutoujian Playground is the place to be. Some skaters hang out next to the half pipe. Others stand atop the ramp on the opposite side of the park with their boards hanging over the edge. They watch their fellow skaters attempt tricks, hyping them up and offering tips as they wait to “drop in” for a turn.
