Director of Academic Programs chosen for Rose

Dabney Hailey, the former curator of painting, sculpture and photography at the Davis Museum at Wellesly College, has joined the staff of the Rose Art Museum as the Director of Academic Programs, according to a July 1 BrandeisNow press release.


Changes take place within dining services

Aaron Bennos, the former director of operations for Campus Dining, has replaced Michael Newmark as director of Dining Services, according to an e-mail to the Justice from Bennos.Bennos wrote that Newmark departed in June when he was promoted to district manager.


University considering alternative options to selling art from Rose collection

Brandeis administrators are currently in talks with international auction house Sotheby's to explore methods of garnering revenue from the Rose Art Museum that do not include the sale of artwork, according to a May 27 University press release.The press release explains that these talks are in the formative stages and that "President [Jehuda] Reinharz said it is premature to say what kind of agreements might be negotiated, what the time frame may be, what parties might be interested, what art might be included or how much revenue any agreement might generate.""After discussing the issue over the last year, Brandeis has decided it's time to take the next step and seriously explore what options there are for non-sale alternatives," wrote Senior Vice President for Communications Andrew Gully in an e-mail to the Justice.In an interview with the Justice, Reinharz said that he was unsure what the methods of gaining revenue would consist of and explained that the University is relying on the expertise of Sotheby's staff.


Oren to grads: Dream and take responsibility

Israeli Ambassador to the United States Michael Oren spoke about the correlation between dreams and responsibilities during his keynote address as part of Brandeis' 59th commencement exercises on May 23 in the Gosman Sports and Convocation Center.


Faculty vote in favor of American Studies changeover

At their May 21 meeting, the faculty voted to replace the current American Studies department with an interdisciplinary program in American Studies, a change suggested by the Brandeis 2020 Committee that will take effect July 1.The motion that Dean of Arts and Sciences Adam Jaffe presented at the faculty meeting stated that "effective July 1, 2010, the existing undergraduate major in American Studies be administered by a new interdisciplinary program in American Studies for a period of seven years.


Bold Ideas Group releases final report

The Bold Ideas Group, a committee designed to formulate initiatives for the University that would simultaneously enhance its profile and generate revenue, released its report last Friday in a campuswide e-mail sent by Provost Marty Krauss, the chair of the committee.


New institute established at Heller School

The Schneider Institutes and the Programs in Sustainable International Development at Brandeis are collaborating to create an Institute for Global Health and Development, a research institute housed within the Heller School for Social Policy and Management designed to garner information that will help policymakers increase their focus on the impoverished, wrote Prof.


University conference draws controversy

The Center for European and German Studies' April 28 conference on the rise of right-wing radicalism in the United States and Europe has generated controversy resulting in conservative political commentator Michael Graham's discussion of the conference on Fox News.


Fund information session is unsuccessful

No students attended last Thursday's information session about the constitutional amendment regarding the implementation of a Sustainability Fund that will add $15.00 annually to the current Student Activities Fee.According to the amendment proposal, the Brandeis Sustainability Fund "provides financial support for Brandeis undergraduate students willing to undertake projects to improve Brandeis's environmental sustainability." If approved, the amendment would also result in a Sustainability Fund Board, a secured organization that would allocate funding for student projects.
