Lawrence addresses visiting parents

University President Frederick Lawrence addressed parents and students on the University's past year and plans for the future as part of the Fall Fest family weekend last Sunday in Levin Ballroom. Lawrence spoke about the role of Brandeis in responding to the unique challenges that students face.


Activist alumnus inspires students

Correction appended. Andrew Slack '02, co-founder and executive director of the Harry Potter Alliance, spoke in Pearlman Lounge last Thursday about the forthcoming Brandeis chapter fo the HPA, as well as the organization's goals and initiatives in an event sponsored by the Sociology Department and the Office of the Dean of Arts and Sciences. According to the HPA website, the organization "work[s] for human rights, equality, and a better world" by drawing parallels to J.K.


East and off-campus senators elected

On Sept. 29, Ethan Levy '15 was elected as East Quad senator and Sunny Aidasani '14 was elected as Off-Campus senator in the third round of the Student Union elections. Approximately 29 percent of East Quad residents and five percent of off-campus residents voted. The other elected senator positions were filled in the first two rounds of elections, which took place on Sept.


Couple discusses CIA leak scandal

Former Central Intelligence Agency Covert Operative Valerie Plame Wilson and former Ambassador Joe Wilson spoke in the Rapaporte Treasure Hall last Wednesday about their roles in investigating claims of nuclear threat leading up to the Iraq War and about how the information they uncovered was manipulated by the administration of then-U.S.


IGS hosts discussion on unsustainable practices

The International and Global Studies Program hosted "Green Growth: Environmentally Smart Economic Development," a discussion that focused on how to change the supply and demand of environmentally unsustainable practices and the role of governments and organizations in this endeavor, last Wednesday. The event featured Greg Fishbein, the managing director of forest carbon at the Nature Conservancy, and two students majoring in IGS, Stephanie Karol '12 and Ben Rifkin '12. Fishbein discussed the environmental impact of deforestation and land use, primarily in Indonesia and Brazil.


University ranked a best value

Brandeis has been ranked 23rd out of 100 private universities in Kiplinger's list of best values in private education. According to Kiplinger's website, the purpose of the list is to "identify institutions that are both academically strong and affordable." For this year's list, Kiplinger, a business and personal finance publication, has taken "a fresh look at ? issues that affect real families" and has placed more weight in high four-year?rather than five-year?graduation rates and efforts to lower student debt upon graduation, according to its website. The five categories considered in the ranking are?in order of importance?cost and financial aid, competitiveness, academic support, graduation rates and student indebtedness.


Tibetan Buddhist monk speaks on human rights violations

Ninety-year-old Tibetan Buddhist monk Palden Gyatso, imprisoned for 33 years in Chinese prison and labor camps, visited Brandeis last week as part of a series of lectures to raise awareness about human rights violations in his home country. He spoke last Tuesday in the Rapaporte Treasure Hall about maintaining his religious beliefs during his 33 years in a Chinese prison and labor camps. The event was co-sponsored by Students for Tibet and the International Center for Ethics, Justice, and Public Life. Palden spoke in Tibetan while an interpreter translated into English.


Hefner speaks on activism

Former CEO of Playboy Enterprises Christie Hefner '74 spoke in Rapaporte Treasure Hall on Friday about her career and how her experiences at Brandeis have shaped it.
