Squads triumph in last home meeting

The Brandeis fencing squads hosted the Eric Sollee Invitational on Saturday, an annual opportunity for the Judges to showcase their talents throughout their lineup. As the hosts, the Judges strung together an impressive 9-1 combined record, suffering just one slim 15-12 loss at the hands of the New York University men's team. The women, meanwhile, blazed through the combined competition of New Jersey Institute of Technology, Stevens Institute of Technology, Haverford College, Hunter College and NYU. The Judges earned their closest victory, a margin of seven points, against Haverford College. Except for the loss to NYU, the men were dominant throughout the day as well, scoring over 20 points in every single match. Additionally, the invitational marked the last home meet for captains Julian Cardillo '14 and Vikki Nunley '14, who each turned in strong days for the Judges. At the lunch break of the meet, University President Frederick Lawrence made a surprise appearance, honoring the squad's seniors for their work and commitment to the team. Meanwhile, for the women's squad, foilist Caroline Mattos '16 led the charge, posting an undefeated 11-0 record on the day.

This past weekend several Brandeis fencers had the opportunity to go to Virginia Beach, Va. for the January edition of the North American Cup, an event hosted by USA Fencing.

Judges fall to opponent in cross-town meeting

The Brandeis swimming and diving teams took on cross-town rival Bentley University on Friday, and although the teams swam well enough for individual wins, they could not defeat the Falcons. The men's team fell by a final score of 152-83, while the women suffered a 148-79 defeat.

In an action-packed tip-off tournament in the Gosman Sports and Convocation Center this past weekend, the women's basketball team had two strong games to open the season, winning their first against Mount Ida College 74-39 on Friday and just narrowly losing the championship of the invitational to Colby College by a final score of 70-67 on Saturday. The championship game was a tightly fought contest throughout, with Colby making some key free throws and three pointers down the stretch to stave off a Brandeis charge.

Women end in victory

Prior to its final home game on Saturday against New York University, the women's soccer team honored its graduating seniors. All five seniors-forward Megan Kessler '14, midfielders Mary Shimko '14 and Maddy Stein '14, defender Kelly Peterson '14 and goalkeeper Leah Sax '14-fittingly were featured in the starting 11 to round out memorable careers. It would also be the seniors who played major roles in the game's results.
