Softball squad keeps consistent with wins

The softball team swept Worcester Polytechnic Institute in a doubleheader last Saturday at home after splitting doubleheaders against Wheaton College and Endicott College on the road earlier in the week. The Judges, now 19-10 on the season, defeated WPI 3-2 in the first game and 4-1 in the second game. "It was just a team effort, and I think everyone contributed, and everyone stayed positive, which helped," said starting pitcher Melissa Nolan '14. Although the Judges played at home against WPI, the squad was the away team because the doubleheader was originally scheduled to be played at neutral Clark University, but the rain over the weekend moved the game to Brandeis. In the second game, Nolan allowed one run in the bottom of the first inning, but the Judges came back and scored two runs in the top of the third. Third baseman Madison Gagnon '16 hit an RBI double that scored center fielder Amanda Genovese '14 and shortstop Anya Kamber '15, who had four singles in four plate appearances, recorded an RBI single that scored Gagnon. The Judges scored one run in the sixth and one run in the seventh, and Nolan shutdown the Engineers for the rest of the game. Nolan, who also had two hits in the game, allowed four hits in a complete game.

Baseball squad slumps in final Florida games

The Judges got off on the right foot in their second Florida road trip, defeating Case Western Reserve University 4-2 last Tuesday. Yet, the squad's bats soon went cold, resulting in five consecutive losses, all to University Athletic Association rivals. The Judges, now 4-10 overall and 2-6 in UAA play, lost to the University of Rochester, Emory University, Washington University in St.

Elizabeth Warren wins Senate seat

Elizabeth Warren, the Democratic nominee and Harvard Law School professor, defeated Republican incumbent Scott Brown in the Massachusetts senatorial election last night. For the first time in Massachusetts' history, a woman will serve the commonwealth in the United States Senate. "This is your night," said Warren to her supporters in her victory speech last night.

Volleyball: Seniors shine to end year

It could not have been a better Senior Day weekend for the volleyball team last Friday and Saturday. The Judges won all three of their matches and dropped just one set in the Judges Classic hosted at Brandeis.

Brief: New England Patriots showcase offensive might in road victory

The New England Patriots came into this season as one of the prohibitive favorites to win the Super Bowl. After Week 1, they look like a squad that no opposing team will want to face this season. The Patriots handily defeated the Tennessee Titans 34-13 on the road last Sunday behind two touchdown passes from quarterback Tom Brady, a rushing touchdown from running back Stevan Ridley and a stout defensive performance. The victory marked the ninth straight season in which the Patriots won their opening game. The Patriots have scored 27 or more points in their last eight regular season games. While the Patriots continued their offensive excellence against the Titans, the defense displayed obvious improvement from last year's squad. Titans running back Chris Johnson, often considered one of the most explosive running backs in the league, carried the ball 11 times for four yards, the fewest rushing yards he has ran for in his career. The Patriots' defensive line and linebackers repeatedly burst through into the backfield and prevented Johnson from finding the hole to sprint toward the end zone.

New England Patriots Preview: Patriots seek to capture elusive Super Bowl

The motto for the New England Patriots this season is "Super Bowl or bust." This is nothing new for head coach Bill Belichick's team, but with a revamped defense and the signing of wide receiver Brandon Lloyd, Belichick has made it clear that the Patriots are built to avenge last year's loss in the Super Bowl and hoist the coveted Lombardi Trophy. The Patriots, with the drafting of defensive end Chandler Jones and linebacker Dont'a Hightower in the first round of the 2012 NFL draft, are gearing toward a gameplan that focuses on getting after the opposing team's quarterback and making more game-changing plays.
