There is no immediate plan to build a shared prayer space, a senior administrator said.A plan to renovate all three chapels and turn the protestant Harlan Chapel into a general prayer space-which would make the Bethlehem Chapel the home for both Catholics and Protestants-will not be pursued in the immediate future, Senior Vice President for Students and Enrollment Jean Eddy said. The plans-designed by Eddy to make the chapels better accommodate students' worship needs-are on hold due to a lack of funding and student dissatisfaction with the proposal, particularly concerns about Protestants and Catholics sharing space. There is no current plan to build a shared nondenominational worship space, a highlight of the proposal, "apart from the future plan for the chapels area," Eddy wrote in an e-mail to the Justice Friday.Eddy said a shortage of space is partially to a blame for there not being a current proposal on the table for a shared worship space.

"I find that so catty," Student Union President Alison Schwartzbaum '08 said. I had asked her about allegations by one union official regarding favoritism in her administration, and, as has often been the case this semester, she didn't like the question."It's another example of the media trying to pick fights and create drama where there isn't any," she said.Such deflection of criticism has been common in Schwartzbaum's administration-one that seems far less transparent than the government that preceded it-and one that, so far, has seemed less effective at times.I covered the Union extensively when Schwartzbaum's predecessor was soaring.
Java City in the Shapiro Campus Center will not be changing over to an Einstein Bros. Bagels until mid-December, Student Union President Alison Schwartzbaum '08 said. The change-over was supposed to have happened over the summer, the Justice reported in late August, but ran into equipment snags, according to Mark Collins, vice president for campus operations.Schwartzbaum said Collins told her, and she agreed, it didn't make sense to close down Java City for "four days to a week" to make the change-over, because so many students rely on Java City.
Technical errors once again plagued the Student Union's voting system during elections last week, Union Secretary Alex Braver '09 said. The voting system has come under intense scrutiny by Union officials and students after recent elections, including last spring's, had persistent technical errors that allowed alumni to vote and disenfranchised some students, especially mid-years.
Candidates for Massachusetts Secretary of the Commonwealth John Bonifaz and Jill Stein told students that replacing incumbent William Galvin, a democrat, would restore a responsive and transparent public servant to the post."Most people don't know what the Secretary of State does," said Stein, a Rainbow-Green Party member, last Tuesday in the Rapaporte Treasure Hall to about 45 students."They don't have a clue if he's appointed or elected or what," Stein said "The secretary oversees the infrastructure of democracy.

A "modified Modfest" has been tentatively scheduled for Oct. 21, Student Union Director of Social Affairs Cindy Kaplan '08 announced at the Union Senate meeting Monday night.Modfest, the popular outdoor party held in the Foster Mods, which provides free beer to students over 21, was placed under a "moratorium" last spring by the administration because of concerns that it promotes excessive drinking and results in an abnormally high number of ambulances dispatched on campus in response to intoxicated individuals.Union President Alison Schwartzbaum '08 said her administration is discussing new safety measures to implement at this year's party.
