Concerns raised on crosswalk safety

The University will be stationing a Waltham police officer at the South Street crosswalk between the main campus and Gosman Sports and Convocation Center at random times to urge students to press the button to use the warning light at the crosswalk, Director of Public Safety Ed Callahan said.


Hughes wins VP in special election

Adam Hughes '11 defeated former Senator-at-Large Andrew Brooks '09 in the Student Union vice presidential election last Wednesday in an election marked by allegations of intimidation, controversial blogging between students and candidates on Innermost Parts, a Brandeis student blog, intense campaigning and technical difficulties with voting.The election was called for after Immediate Past Student Union Vice President Michael Kerns '09 submitted his resignation at the beginning of the semester.


University offers fellows programs as incentive for prospective students

Brandeis has launched a new fellows program as an incentive for high-achieving students to attend the University as opposed to competing universities that can offer much more generous financial aid packages, Senior Vice President for Students and Enrollment Jean Eddy said.Last year, Brandeis' competitors such as Harvard, Yale, Dartmouth, Princeton, Brown and Tufts announced sweeping changes to their financial aid programs, dropping the formulas they had been using before, Eddy said.The New York Times reported last December that Harvard would generally charge students from families with incomes between $120,000 and $180,000 tuition equal to 10 percent of their family income and would be offering grants instead of loans.


Food prices see little change

Dramatically rising food prices nationwide have had little effect on Brandeis Dining Services, Director of Dining Services Michael Newmark wrote in an e-mail to the Justice.Prices for food at Brandeis have only slightly increased, in line with previous years, he explained.

Campus groups organize hurricane disaster relief effort

The Student Union is organizing a fundraising drive this week to benefit the victims of hurricanes Gustav, Hanna and Ike, which struck areas in the United States, Haiti and Cuba last week, said Student Union President Jason Gray '10 and Noah Kaplan '09, president of the Brandeis chapter of the National Collegiate Volunteers Group and co-founder of the national group.In an campuswide e-mail yesterday, Gray wrote, "While we hope that any future destruction is minimal, we have all observed the damage and destruction that has already occurred.


Former Union V.P. Michael Kerns resigns

Former Student Union Vice President Michael Kerns '09 resigned from his position at the start of this semester, Student Union Director of Communication James Ansorge '09 announced in an e-mail to the Union News listserv last Wednesday.
