General Education club revived

Monday night's speech by U.S. Sen. Carl Levin was the first event co-sponsored by the General Education Now club, an organization started by two sophomores trying to bring more prominent speakers to campus in an effort to reinstate a program from the 1950s and '60s.The club's co-founders, Jonah Seligman '10 and Daniel Gillman '10, said the idea to create Gen Ed Now grew out of Prof.

Assistant Vice President for Students and Enrollment AppointedIn an e-mail to the Brandeis community, Vice President for Students and Enrollment Jean Eddy announced the appointment of her assistant, Frank Urso, who came to the school in late November.According to the e-mail, Urso will "oversee the financial and budget administration processes for the entire division and have responsibility for the overall management of the division's budget." Urso will lead projects and advise on institutional policy development and will help with the administration of the Student Activities Fee.Urso comes from Harvard University, where he was a director in the office of Technology Services, worked in the Division of Research and Faculty Development and managed the offices of Intellectual Capital and Research Administration in the Harvard Business School.


GAS rejected by more students

While applications to the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences increased by 12 percent last year and students' GRE scores rose, fewer students who were accepted chose to attend, according to GAS Dean Gregory Freeze.


Levin to speak

U.S. Sen. Carl Levin, D-Mich., chairman of the Senate Armed Services committee, will speak at Brandeis next Monday as part of the University's observance of Martin Luther King Day, according to a University press release.


Union denounces admin's decision

The Student Union protested the administration's decision to accept Student Events' proposal to receive its funding directly from the Department of Student Activities with a rally in the Shapiro Campus Center Atrium last Sunday night.Another protest will be held Thursday in front of the administrative complex, Director of Union Affairs Jason Gray '10 said.


Miles working on marketing strategies

The University needs to start allocating money for national print and broadcast advertising in order to build a brand identity and keep pace with its peer institutions, said Senior Vice President for Communications Lorna Miles.

Student Events' request to receive 17 percent of the Student Activities Fee directly from the Department of Student Activities, without going through the Student Union Finance Board, was approved by Senior Vice President for Students and Enrollment Jean Eddy last Monday.


Union calls for rejection of proposal

The Union Senate passed a unanimous resolution last Sunday calling on the administration to deny Student Events' request to receive 17 percent of the Student Activities Fee directly instead of through the Finance Board.The Union called Student Events' move unconstitutional and detrimental to the ideas of student autonomy and financial oversight.
