Higher salaries place Brandeis in more competitive position

The University's three-year catch-up plan for increases in faculty salaries led to a record faculty recruitment year, as Brandeis lost only two prospective professors to other schools, Dean of Arts and Sciences Adam Jaffe said.In the previous three years, there were between four and seven professors who rejected job offers from Brandeis for faculty positions elsewhere, Jaffe said.


Center's funds mainly to be used for grads

Prof. Ilan Troen (NEJS), the founding director of the new Center for Israel Studies, said the Center's funding will go primarily toward training graduate students.This summer, the Charles and Lynn Schusterman Family Foundation established the Center with a $15 million grant.


Senate censures Union Secretary Goldman

After a five-hour meeting last Sunday night, the Student Union Senate voted to censure Chief of Elections and Union Secretary Michael Goldman '08 for disclosing election tallies to candidates while voting was still taking place during last spring's and last week's senate elections.

LTS looks at options for moving WhoCash online

Library and Technology Services is considering its options for an online WhoCash payment system that would enable students to add to their accounts online using their credit cards, an LTS administrator said.The idea was first broached by the Student Union Senate in January after Jason Gray '10, now the Union's director of Union affairs, received a suggestion from a student during his campaign for Massell Quad senator.Although Union officials expressed hope last semester that a system might be in place by the fall, Anne Livermore, LTS assistant director for student technical services, said the plan is still in its early stages.


Administration fields construction complaints

The administration said it would try to help minimize early-morning noise in the construction of the new Ridgewood residence hall following complaints by students in nearby Ziv Quad that disturbances started as early as 6 a.m."We have reinforced with our construction manager the issue of making sure that we avoid wherever possible the noisiest activities between seven and eight in the morning," Vice President of Capital Projects Dan Feldman said.Feldman said that Student Union President Shreeya Sinha '09 communicated student complaints of noise to him in a telephone conversation.


Trustee rethinks Jewish donations

Jewish philanthropist and Brandeis trustee Michael Steinhardt said the University has great potential for helping realize his philanthropic aim of strengthening the Jewish identities among unaffiliated American Jews.
