LTS considers software switch

Library and Technology Services is considering switching the standard course-management system from WebCT to an open-source program.Perry Hanson, vice president of LTS, and Chief University Librarian Susan Wawrzaszek said they would like the University to adopt Moodle instead of WebCT Vista 3.0, which has been used since fall of 2005.


BREAKING NEWS: Finkelstein receives support; speech back on

Middle East scholar Norman Finkelstein will speak on campus after all, now that two student groups agreed to sponsor the event, Assistant Director of Student Activities Sarah Bordeleau confirmed yesterday."You can never be sure around here, but it looks like the pieces are all falling together, finally," Kevin Conway '09, who invited Finkelstein, said.


Brandeis, Al Quds students to meet in Turkey

Students from Brandeis and its partner institution in East Jerusalem, Al Quds University, will take a joint 10-day trip to Turkey this August to develop relationships between students, senior administrators said The partnership between the two schools took off after a February 2006 meeting between University President Jehuda Reinharz and Al Quds President Sari Nusseibeh in Jerusalem.


Zionist group challenges essay

The leader of a national Zionist organization has criticized the University over an essay written by a senior fellow at the Crown Center for Middle East Studies.The essay, penned by senior fellow Khalil Shikaki and published by the center, appears to have gone mostly unnoticed on campus.But Morton Klein, the president of the Zionist Organization of America, seized upon the essay as further proof that donors should reconsider their financial support for the University.


Finkelstein, Pipes to visit next month

Controversial Middle East pundits Daniel Pipes and Norman Finkelstein will likely speak on campus in April, Director of Student Activities Stephanie Grimes said.The students who invited the two to campus were told by Student Life administrators and Student Union President Alison Schwartzbaum '08 last month that they had to meet with the Union's new "Campaign for Peace" committee to discuss the details of their events before approval.

University secures $5 million journalism grant

Philanthropists Elaine and Gerald Schuster donated $5 million to Brandeis' Institute for Investigative Journalism this month, according to a University press release.The institute is now named the Elaine and Gerald Schuster Institute for Investigative Journalism as a result of the gift."We are happy to support the urgent work of the institute, especially in this era when fewer media outlets will dedicate the resources needed to dig deeply and expose wrongdoing," Elaine Schuster said in the press release.
