Hillel director departs, Board to fill position
Executive Director of Hillel Larry Sternberg M.A. '78 is leaving his position "with deep regret" after spending more than 30 years here as a student, faculty member and staff member. The announcement of Sternberg's departure first came on Friday in an email from Louis Benjamin '78 and Harry Waizer, co-presidents of the Hillel Board of Directors. Later that evening, Sternberg sent out an email of his own, confirming the announcement. "I have learned much from my teachers, more from my colleagues and the most from my students," Sternberg wrote, quoting Talmud. In an interview with the Justice, Waizer did not comment on the reasons for Sternberg leaving, saying "we are all sorry to see him go." Senior Vice President for Students and Enrollment Andrew Flagel said in an interview that the Hillel Board is autonomous when it comes to decisions like this one. "I'm confident that whatever decisions that Larry and the Hillel Board [of Directors] reached ... with the best interests of the University and the student body in mind," he said. Waizer said that "the change in leadership is a time to re-examine, so that's one of the things we are doing.
Amendment for Union approved by student body
The student body voted on Sunday to approve an amendment to the Student Union Constitution for the creation of a constitutional review system, according to an email from Student Union Secretary Sneha Walia '15 to the Brandeis community. With 280 students voting, 82 percent voted to approve the amendment, nine percent voted against the amendment and nine percent abstained. Walia wrote in her email that "the Union will begin working on the Constitutional Review Task Force this week." The amendment adds to the Constitution an independent constitutional review, which will take place every four years.

University to kick off online learning involvement in Spring 2014

Spencer to leave University
Dean of Admissions Mark Spencer will leave the University to become director of college advising at Deerfield Academy, a four-year college preparatory school in Deerfield, Mass at the end of the academic year. According to Senior Vice President for Communications Ellen de Graffenreid, Spencer has not yet been replaced. "We are carefully looking at every position that comes open as part of efforts to best serve our students and community with the best possible use of resources," wrote de Graffenreid in an email. "[Senior Vice President for Students and Enrollment Andrew Flagel] and Associate Vice President Carolina Figueroa will be working with the admissions team this summer to review the leadership roles within the team and determine how best to build on their track record of success," she continued. De Graffenreid did not provide any details about Spencer's departure, but did write that "Deerfield Academy is one of the top prep schools in the nation." Flagel declined to comment on either Spencer's departure or the process for selecting the dean's replacement, saying in an interview with the Justice that "personnel discussions have to go through [de Graffenreid], and that's just University policy ... Comment[ing] on personnel issues, as you can imagine, can become challenging in other instances." Spencer declined to comment beyond confirming that he is leaving the University and taking the position at Deerfield Academy. Spencer began his tenure as dean in fall 2010, replacing Jean Eddy, who had been serving both as dean of admissions and as senior vice president for students and enrollment.
