Service celebrates Mary's life

A memorial service was held to honor the life of Mary Jagoda '05 on Wed., who was killed on Oct. 12 while kayaking on Cape Cod.Brandeis students, faculty, administrators and members of Mary's family gathered together in the Shapiro Campus Center Theatre as Father David Michael offered the opening reflection."We stand with you in your loss of your beloved Mary," he said to Mary's parents.


A single Flame...

Brandeis commemorated the two-year anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks last Thursday.Those in attendance were presented with a host of options to express their feelings, memorialize the victims and reflect on the effects of the day.At 8:46 a.m., when the first plane hit the north tower of the World Trade Center in New York, a group of approximately 80 students and staff gathered outside the main library for a moment of silence.

I am an American citizen by birth, but I am still trying to figure out exactly what this means. I have sat through my share of history courses, partaken in my country's holidays and even chose American Studies as my major, but I'm still not completely satisfied.Whenever I think I have America figured out, something always seems to backfire.

Dick Clark of American Bandstand once said, "Music is the soundtrack of our lives." Perhaps it is time to tweak that statement a little; perhaps it should be, "Music is the soundtrack of our war."It is interesting to examine how the many aspects of American society and culture have been affected after almost four weeks of war - music is one of them.
