EDITORIAL: Turn spirit into pride

Brandeis has long been a school of active, lively individuals, but rarely has that energy manifested itself as school spirit. In that light, this editorial board commends students, faculty and staff for their recent collective effort to revitalize spirit on campus and bring the community together. Brandeis earned a spot in the final six of a competition to host the TODAY Show due in large part to the effort put in by students.

EDITORIAL: Manos' hire raises concerns

At last week's Faculty meeting, Prof. Harry Mairson (COSI) expressed his concerns and relayed those of other faculty members about recruiting a new chief operating officer, Steven Manos, to oversee and steer the University's budget and financial operations.

EDITORIAL: Guiding hand

Last week, the University launched a mobile application called "Guidebook" for first-year Orientation. The Guidebook program includes a building and office locator and a campus wide events calendar, among other features.

EDITORIAL: Fundraising woes

Fiscal year 2011 saw the lowest amount of contributions, gifts and grants given to the University in at least 10 years, a Justice analysis of federal tax filings has found. In fiscal 2011, the most recent year for which numbers are publicly available, the University reported a total of nearly $29 million in income from fundraising dollars, a roughly $7-million decrease from the previous fiscal year, and a $70-million drop from the height of university fundraising in fiscal 2008. This decrease may be detrimental for a university still finding its financial footing after a harsh recession. University development officials have told the Justice that the decrease in fundraising dollars is largely due to the presidential transition period.

EDITORIAL: On the right track

Over the summer, the Brandeis International Business School announced that four new specializations will be added to the graduate school's offerings this semester. The specializations-Asset Management, Corporate Finance, Risk Management and Marketing-join the real estate specialization, which has already begun helping students find relevant job offers and internships, according to Trenery Dolbear, senior associate dean and professor emeritus of economics at IBS. This editorial board commends the International Business School for creating these new opportunities. The specializations focus on subject matter pertinent to entering the business world. In the wake of the 2008 recession, asset and risk management are two relevant topics that are useful for students who are intending on going into the business field. The tracks are available to graduate students throughout IBS, regardless of their program.

Alum competes in London Olympics

Update: United States finishes eighth in team sabre event. The United States sabre squad, after winning a silver medal over Russia at the Beijing Olympics in 2008, could not pull off a similar feat in London, settling for an eighth-place team finish. Tim Morehouse '00, who secured an eighth-place individual finish, ended team play with a disappointing 1-6-2 record for the U.S.
